When walking through the woods looking for shots, I always try to remember to look back to where I had come, and to look up. Branches and sky.

u r so fasinated by the atomic bomb maybe because ur mother wasnt in Hiroshima nor Nakasakie when ur guys tested ur facintion . sure you like it and lecture us about the art of a photos .. Great art . you must be proud of yourself ha?
Harold Edgerton, the "E", in EG&G Corporation. A professor at MIT, and two of his students formed the company. The company started providing the service of high speed photography, and expanded into making specialty electronic components, such as the krytron, which was needed to detonate the chemical explosives precisely enough so that made the "implosion" type nuclear bomb (fatman) possible.
I have a pile of old school ultra high speed cameras.....i hate to scrap them but with digital tech they really are just junk
There's a high speed photograph of a nuke going off inside a house where the explosion is still inside the intact house. Amazing! I saw it once many years ago but can't find it on the internet.
There is so much going on in such a short amount of time it boggles the mind lol.
I remember, we had a set of those disney books when I was a child. I believe I still have them packed away somewhere. They were great !
There is something spiritual about witnessing or even seeing photos of a nuclear explosion. There is something deeper than I think we mere mortals can explain.
This is an example of why mega pixels are not the answer to creative photography.
Alex, really beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing. I know you don't like discussing gear, but what are you shooting with? Just curious. Love your channel.
Keeping photography human 👌
After trying smartphone photography in many fields (landscape, street, cars, studio portrait), I still think that smartphone photography is not serious, more like a fun challenge. I agree that a smartphone is just a form factor. It could still be considered a camera, even a Sony mirrorless camera, because more than half of the sensors in smartphones are made by Sony (and about 1/3 are made by Samsung). As for optics, you also have notable names like Leica involved. The sensor sizes of modern smartphones often exceed those of some point-and-shoot cameras that are still in production today, not to mention the older ones. And while smartphone photo processing is aggressive and varies among brands, all modern smartphones allow you to shoot in RAW format and use full manual controls (there are free apps for both Android and iOS that enable this). In these cases, there's no processing at all, and the pictures are neutral and flexible like DSLR RAWs. However, if you need: - much better noise performance when there's no sunlight, - more lens choices, not just 24-28mm (and a couple of lower-res non-RAW extras in some expensive flagship models), - shallower DOF (fake DOF effects are still ugly, hair-eating, etc.), - more resolution and detail to allow more cropping and larger print sizes, - better grip, - physical buttons, wheels, rings, etc., - a viewfinder, - more accurate and/or faster autofocus, especially for bursts, - quality lens accessories (yes we have macro/wide/tele adapters, ND, polarizing, gradient filters for smartphones too but quality and ease of use just isn't comparable) - flashes/strobes (they are helpful not only in studio), then a "real" camera is still a significantly better choice. You'll do the same job better and faster, with less chance of failure. After analyzing my smartphone photos from the past, I sometimes regret that I didn't have a "real" camera with me. So yes, it's good to have a smartphone, but often that is not enough. A smartphone is not a proper replacement, especially when you consider the value-price factor and the pre-owned camera gear market. A smartphone can teach you many things in photography, but its limitations are not worth the compactness. It does not become "the best" just because you have it with you all the time. That is just a popular saying used as an excuse and justification, but it's not 100% fair. I don't care about "blending in with the smartphone crowd" stuff; that's silly. You're doing photography, you should not be ashamed of handling a camera. Also, try talking a random person into making a portrait if you have proper gear versus just a smartphone. If you have some respect, you won't even attempt the latter unless you have a good lighting/scene setup with assistants if required and you could explain that you're performing a "smartphone photography" challenge.
Being in a camera club I tend to take pictures that will compete in a competition. That may be why I take so few pictures when I go out with my camera. Some of the images you showed were technically very good but would not place in a competition. I saw what you meant by you tend to shoot the same style of image whether your home or away from home in a totally new environment.
I have been following you on UA-cam for a few months now. It is a revelation, finally talking about photography and especially about the meaning of the image. Speaking is one thing, showing photos as an example and source of inspiration strengthens the explanation. Together with your fascinating thoughts about photography and the photo art course I am taking, my own photographic work has improved. Feel free to continue. Thanks.
It wasn't just EG&G that did such photography. For instance, the UK developed its own camera: the C4 Rotating Mirror High Speed Camera. Nowadays you can buy (expensive) cameras which expose one million frames per second. The (Oxfordshire) Rosalind Franklin Institute is developing one to expose one hundred million frames per second
Fascinating luciferian beauties... - a terrible cancer that affects sick minds..
Yes, sir!
I think its possible to take so much pictures within a second of nuclear blast us because its so bright. So you can just roll through film...
It’s not art for art’s sake though. It’s just analysis.
I love the NASA photography; those images are spectacular! Beautiful exposures, tone, and texture from the medium, which I assume would have been low ISO medium format transparencies, with very low F-stop lenses? Of course the prints are just as technically excellent too!
Alex My rtrip this year was Chicago i spent 10 days there photographing the city , some strret photography, architectural photography and water front photography it was inspiring touring the city with camera in hand
Is there a pictorial book "to buy" of these Atomic detonations.. they're beautiful yet destructive.. I'm really interested in purchasing it and showing it to my friends.. a PICTORIAL BOOK..Thanks.. Semper Fidelis Semper Fortis
Love your ethos and style of photography. Once again a great video.
Liked and subscribed. Great video. 😊
Very interesting video. Notwithstanding the bizarre comment by the troll about the title mismatch. 😮 The images are forever fascinating and in the case of nuclear explosions... Terrifying!
Thank you. This is quite an old video and for some reason UA-cam is now pushing it to a much wider audience than the original intended one - hence the flood of troll comments about titles! :D Thanks for watching
Loved your thoughts, as always. Mr. Poe - what a star!
But what if you actually live in a boring place? Like I do, unless you lik pine trees, fir trees or stumbling around in forests? Instead of running away from it I turned my camera 180 and started shooting the boring stuff and THAT is the most fun I've hade with a camera for years (even to the point that those photographs might become something bigger than just pixels on my monitor, might become a book or a local exhibition in the end).
I must say this which may be upsetting to some. The german scientists we obtained from the nazi party made the difference. The entire world was decades behind the germans with scientific knowledge. Secondly i am an amateur photographer. I also find great beauty in those pictures of the atomic bomb in the first milliseconds. I believe i see great destruction can also mean a new beginning. Its very difficult to put properly into words. Thank you for your video.
I absolutely love photography 📸 & and agree, same old, same old . Hundreds of content with professional photographers doing the same thing ......picture of a water fall - long exposure of a pier - picture of a tree 🌳 blah blah . Street photography hundreds following the same rule of thumb 👍. Have we run out of content???
It was a pleasure connecting with you in SF. Thanks for doing the photo walk and introducing me to Irving Penn. Can’t wait for more videos!
Any time!
The images of Ed White doing an EVA are incredible. Imagine being one of the first couple of people to ever do that? To see earth from that view moving at 17,000 MHP and “floating” above the earth in space in 1965. I wish that could have been me!
Good Day. Excellent. My son and I stood on the spot where the Trinity Site Tower once stood. We visited the site on the 50th anniversary of the "Trinity" test. I've never seen this picture of the tower as it is actually in the process of being Disintegrated. Going there was one of my "bucket list items". I was born in 1952. I just found your site and the photos are fascinating. I subscribed. Thank You.
Thanks, it's great to have you here
Just in case. Your video extremely over-sharpened
I never go for my weekly food for thought at Alex's place and come away hungry! 🙂 Thanks and cheers from DownUnder 🦘

I feel the same way! As a woman, you must have a unique perspective.

I think they are beautiful. Stirs my patriotic soul.
The very young Lartigue, firing his box camera at floor level, would endorse this video. See: "In My Bedroom, Collection of my Racing Cars, Paris, 1905"
I, too, have been fascinated by the high speed images, rapatronic cameras that Edgerton created. I had a job interview with EG&G in LV. While waiting, I noticed a 6 up set of images that started at the first glow of the fision detonation, through to the final image showing the structure fully engulfed in the plasma fireball. You could see the rope trick effects following cables to the ground over the structure. It was both eerie to look at and the 'beauty' of this millisecond event. I've not since, seen this series. Scientifically, it showed fireball structure. As photography goes, there existed a strange beauty with a wonderful range of densities. I believe that Edgerton was principle in the detonator triggers for the early nuclear devices. This was from his development of strobe devices. At RIT, we had a lab dedicated to stroboscopic imaging, such as the bullet fired through the apple.
The narrator for the fan film sounds like Richard Feynman
The photographer's countdown would be: 11, 8, 5.6, 4, 2.8, 2, 1.8, 1.2 - if your wealthy; bang!
